Plane Crash
One of the greatest sports disasters took place on February 15, 1961 when Sabena Air Lines Flight 548, en route from Idlewild (now Kennedy) Airport in New York to Brussels Belgium, crashed on approach to the airport in Brussels.
Witnesses on the ground reported wonderful weather, and the plane and crew offered no indication of trouble during the apparently uneventful flight. However, after the captain made two passes at landing and was attempting a third, witnesses on the ground reported seeing the landing gear retract and the plane pull up suddenly before entering a series of high speed spins and crashing into a farmers field and pond, killing the farmer. Another casualty on the ground survived, but had his leg severed by the crash.
The entire US Figure Skating Team, fresh from their successful US Championships in Colorado Springs were on their way to Prague, Czechoslovakia for the World Championships. The youth onboard was enormous, a tremendous pool of fresh-faced talent ready to take over the successes of the US team during the previous year in the 1960 Olympics, many of these Olympians having moved on to professional careers.
As with most of these tragedies, this had its share of strange twists of fate. Young Douglas Ramsay, only 16, had finished 4th at the US Championships and would not have normally been competing at the Worlds; however, he was aboard and ready to compete in Prague due to the fact that the 3rd place finisher ahead of him, Tim Brown had developed chest pains and doctors advised him against making the trip.
In another ironic twist, Diane Sherbloom took the place of Larry Pierce's regular partner, Marilyn Meeker. Marilyn had injured her ankle and was unable to compete, and this led to Diane being on the fateful flight.
With so many young faces, it was feared that US Figure Skating would be lost for a generation, but only 3 years later, young Peggy Fleming emerged and eventually became Olympic Champion in 1968.
On January 28, 2011 the entire team, as well as the coaches, officials, and family members of this team, were all inducted into the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
The victims of this crash are generally noted to number 73 - we are numbering them at 74, due to the fact that Margaret Pozzuolo, age 20 was an expectant mother.
We honor the sacrifice of all victims of this tragedy, as well as their survivors. This month marks the 50th anniversary of this disaster.

Note on Richard & Jacqueline Robinson - Can anyone answer the following questions from a visitor?
Hello sir;
I attach this article on the couple died
in 1961. Can you tell me the name of Jacqueline and her exact
date of birth?
Can you tell me if he were married in
Winona Lake?
And finally, can you tell me if Richard
was in 1946 and 1947 in France or Belgium? Any possible
information would be helpful because I think that Jacqueline may
be my family I'm looking for for years.
I warmly thank you for helping me.
